What is PPDS food?
PPDS stands for Pre-Packed for Direct Sale. It means food that is packaged at the same premises it's sold from, before the customer chooses or orders it, and sold directly to the person who will eat it. A sandwich wrapped in the morning for the counter, or cupcakes boxed the night before a market, are classic PPDS examples. Since 1 October 2021, PPDS food in the UK must carry a Natasha's Law label.
What must a Natasha's Law label show?
A PPDS label must show the name of the food and a full ingredients list in descending order of weight, with all 14 major allergens emphasised — usually in bold — wherever they appear in that list. The checklist above tailors this to your answers.
What if my food isn't PPDS?
If you make or pack food to order in front of the customer, or sell it loose, it usually isn't PPDS — but you still have a legal duty to provide accurate allergen information, whether verbally or in writing. If you sell wholesale to other businesses, different (prepacked food) labelling rules apply. When in doubt, check the FSA guidance below or ask your local authority.
